SINK TO THE SEA
SINK TO THE SEA is an experimental, post-rock, ambient, Krautrock-inspired trio comprised of Marc Bobro (Crying For Kafka), James Van Arsdale (The Coral Sea, Heavy Cosmic Kinetic), and Noah Whatoff. We are based in Southern California but do not like the sun.
Our music is adventurous. It is sonic exploration. Compositions are combined with extensive improvisations that allow for interplay. We create moody soundscapes that are soundtracks to small moments in time. They are meditations.
They are inward and outward-facing.
They are inward and outward-facing.
The music is inspired by the natural world. It borrows from visual art forms collage and kinetic abstract sculpture in the way sounds are built and used. Horror movie soundtracks, Frippertronics, free jazz, electronica, and psychedelia all combine to form evocative and thoughtful pieces that delve into varied subjects such as dreams, war, enlightenment, discovery, communication, and our six senses.
The instrumentation is varied: Moog, Mellotron, Vermona, synthesizers and oscillators, guitar, bass, electronic and acoustic drums, samples, sound effects, euphonium, theremin. Computers are not used in the performance of these works. We utilize the overlapping space of analog and digital technology. Arrangements are composed to be fluid.
Traditional rock song form is rejected.

It is our hope that these works have feeling and ask questions—their layers revealing more and more over time.

"A Gift Carried by the Left Hand feels like a collage of emotions and textures. It shifts between vast, oceanic sounds and intimate, reflective moments. “Sinead” showcases the trio’s talent for creating atmospheric, emotionally charged music. Here, intricate layers of ambient sound build a cinematic feel. The depth of emotion in this track makes it haunting yet beautiful, a perfect example of their ability to blend raw feelings with subtle soundscapes."
Ethereal and abstract pop of an environmental nature, for reflections and introspection. It sounds dense at times, it sounds volatile at other times. The horizon always becomes unreal. The ethereal dreampop-style guitars in the background, also camouflaged with post-rock elements, make this track a very sophisticated and complex one despite its apparently simple structure.

A smoothly subtle soundscape that simmers and smoulders with the transfixing tale of how the flare and failure of just one ember can change the fire as a whole. This is beautifully intricate songwriting.

“The expansive, slow-moving style is fantastic and makes for such an epic listen.”
Various Small Flames
The American trio Sink to the Sea presents the single "Azovstal," a brilliant track whose epic and moody identity develops within styles such as Experimental Electronics, Psychedelic Rock, and Post Rock, this single, over its little more than 13 minutes, builds an expressive narrative that gradually transmits different emotions thanks to each of the elements that make up this song that dialogues fluidly and feed each other to take us for dense moments, raw, noisy, bright, sweet, edifying, hopeful, and highly dynamic, without losing an identity accessible and open to all audiences. Although the motivation of this song has to do with peace in Ukraine, this track leaves the door open for the free interpretation of the listeners, where just the stimuli of this track end up taking us to luminous places within the chaos.

... a moody, sensuous soundscape that feels like a soundtrack to fleeting moments in time. As you listen to "Sensing the World by Echo", you'll find yourself on a journey through changing soundscapes. The track starts with an electronic flair, reminiscent of the '80s, complete with a cowbell that adds a nostalgic touch. Then, as if creeping up on you, the music shifts. The grey pads in the middle set a more somber tone, and then, unexpectedly, vocals laced with a vocoder catch you off guard. It's a track that grows on you, layer by layer, revealing new depths with each listen.
Death or Desire
Sink to the Sea creates esoteric sonic landscapes that lurk beneath the soul’s darkest corners, filling the void with haunting beauty.
